One of my current and biggest struggles is teaching non-readers how to read music. We have a frightening number of adolescents without fluid reading skills and it's not because teachers aren't teaching it. Our society is increasingly become reliant upon not reading.
My favorite addition to the iPhone 5? Siri's voice recognition. The girl types my texts, adds to my to-do list, makes calendar entries all with the press of a button. Read a manual to see how to fix a device, make a home repair, apply make-up? Look up a YouTube video and watch how to do it. While the implications of examples like this are scary for literacy in general, I'm nervous about the musical literacy aspect. With ease of recording anything and everything at our fingertips (read, iPhones), how will musical literacy shift and how will it impact our students?
